MA-GELCS Programme Director Delivers Digital Humanities Advanced Seminar at German Swiss International School

8 October — As part of ongoing institutional knowledge transfer initiatives, Dr Jay Parker, the Programme Director of the Master of Arts in Global English Literary and Cultural Studies (MA-GELCS) at HSUHK delivered an advanced seminar to the Year 12 and 13 cohort at the world-leading German Swiss International School (GSIS).
The seminar, delivered to students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Theory of Knowledge curriculum, focused on the application of computational methodologies to historical literature. Drawing on research supported by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC FDS), the session utilized an 8-billion-token corpus to demonstrate how algorithmic processing interacts with traditional qualitative analysis, examining poetic justice using Alexander Pope’s The Dunciad as a primary case study.
This engagement aligns with HSUHK’s broader educational outreach objectives, bringing university-level digital humanities research into high-achieving secondary education environments. It builds on a series of prior academic engagements conducted by the department at other major educational networks, including Kellett School and the English Schools Foundation (ESF).

This research is supported by a grant under the Faculty Development Scheme (FDS) of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (Project No.: UGC/FDS14/H13/23).
